Grade 5 Theory Exam

For piano students of Tony O’Brien Home. Exam Structure. Learning Pathway. Exam Topics.

One part of question 1 or 4  will typically ask you to identify the key (scale) of some part  the extract or ask some other scale related question.  Often the question  tests your understanding of relative major and minor keys e.g. “This extract is in A major. Which other key has the same key signature?” (Ans: F# minor).  This question isn’t modelled below.

More often the question  states the extracts starts in one key and asks what key is ends with.   Occasionally, the extract is presented without a key signature, and you’re asked to identify the scale and rewrite part with key signature.  These questions are modelled below  - they test your ability to recognise a scale (usually minor) from just a set of accidentals.  This skill is sometimes needed in the transposition exercise where the extract is also written without a key signature,

4 (a)  (iii) The extract begins in the key of D minor. In what key does it end?
