Grade 5 Theory Exam

For piano students of Tony O’Brien Home. Exam Structure. Learning Pathway. Exam Topics.

Questions on “metre”*  and time signature will be asked as part of questions one and four. The questions can be very varied, testing your cumulative knowledge of time signatures and rhythm (had you done all the theory grade exams up to grade 5).  The “new” topic presented at Grade 5 is on “irregular” time signatures - e.g. “5” or “7 time” - and usually you are asked to add key signatures to extracts in these “metres” or add bar-lines to extracts with these time signatures. The other “new” topic concerns “tuplets”.
