Grade 5 Theory Exam

For piano students of Tony O’Brien Home. Exam Structure. Learning Pathway. Exam Topics.

Question 1 (15 marks)

The exam has a regular structure of questions and marking scheme.  Sometimes the structure is rearranged by question number -e.g. transposition is sometimes question 5, scales are question 4 and musical extract is question 3.  But Question 6 is always “compose a melody” and Question 7 is always about “cadences”.   The marks available for the whole question, and for subsections of questions of 1 and 4 are always presented on the  exam paper -  you don’t have to remember this marking scheme but you should be aware that question 4 attracts a lot of marks, while the remaining marks are pretty evenly spread amongst the other questions.

A musical extract testing various theory knowledge but will always include sections on   metre, rhythm  and time signatures

Question 2 (10 marks)

Name or write the interval

Question 3 (10 marks)

Transpose a melody

Question 4 (30 marks)

A musical extract testing various theory knowledge but will always include sections on naming chords (6 marks) and testing knowledge of musical instruments (6-10 marks)

Question 5 (10 marks)

Write a scale with and without key signatures

Question 6 (15 marks)

Complete a melody for a named instrument OR compose a melody to words for voice

Question 7 (10 marks)

Identify cadences

Question 6 - “compose a melody”  - is the most relatively demanding question and so will take most time.  All the other questions are routine and can be done quickly if you have the knowledge.

Do as many and as much of ALL the other questions as you can confidently answer, BEFORE you start on question 6.
